New mega-cable for Africa
The African continent will play host to another new submarine cable, linking four continents.
WASACE will link Africa, South America, North America and Europe with fibre-optic cable, the WASACE cable company announced.
"The projects' total fibre length is seven times the circumference of the earth. If the fibres were connected end-to-end, they would stretch three quarters of the way to the moon," a press release read.
The cable is set to have ten times the capacity of previous systems, with billions of dollars invested. Investors include the private equity investment firm VIP Must and the African Development Bank as well as Brazilian and other investors.
WASACE is the latest submarine system to be announced this year, with the SAex cable set to be deployed between Africa and South America as well.
