Artist Of The Day : J Martins
J Martins is not your average Nigerian artist. He is not the one hit wonder that so often characterizes the music industry. He is not the kind of artist you listen to and not be inspired in some way.Instead he is an all rounded music power house who composes, writes and produces his own songs. He is well known for hit songs like "Good Or Bad", "Oyoyo" and P Squares "E No Easy",a song he co produced. in fact,P-Square can credit most of their success to him because he is the man behind the remix to their ground breaking mega hit "Bizzy Body". For J Martins, doors started opening when he introduced Waje to P Square. She would go on to feature on "Do Me" the smash single from their Game Over album.
J Martins released his first album Get Serious to critical acclaim. The album's mature conscious sound made it a favorite among the young and old. With this album J Martins had arrived as a singer in his own right. While most people who know where J Martins comes from say he has forsaken his gospel roots,it should be noted that his music still has a lot of references to God and he is one of the few artists to perfectly fit into the mainstream and yet not be contaminated by the secular music he now sings and produces for other artists. His latest album Elevated has taken up where Get Serious left off and catapulted him into a sought after international star. Its easy to think J Martins was handed everything he has now on silver platter, but a look at his past shows that he had challenges when he got into the music industry. His own father shot at him and almost killed him because he didn't want his son to waste time chasing a music dream when he could have done better things. Earlier in his life,a Pastor put J Martins through school because he couldn't afford tuition fees.
J Martins was born Joshu Kalu Martins Okechukwu to a soldier and a choir mistress in Ohafia,Abia the only Nigerian State he says is mentioned in the Bible, in the book of Genesis specifically. He started singing in church and later took to playing instruments. He got into music production full time when he was in high school. When he graduated he went on to study Mass Communication at the Institute of Management and technology (IMT). When he started Glorious Praise, his first production company,he produced only for Gospel artists but later went mainstream as his productions gained recognition. His first taste of stardom came when he was asked to produce Patty Obasi (of the Nwa Mammy Water Fame), one the most successful gospel musicians in Nigeria.
