Eight family values to embrace

1. Firstly, they tell the younger members of the family their story…

...the journey of how this family got together. How they met, what happened on the way, all the happiness and sadness that have formed part of their journey.  They keep photos or mementos, they keep the stories of the past alive by retelling and reliving them.

2. Secondly, they dream

Whether it’s about a new house, a vacation at the sea or better circumstances, they share their aspirations with each other. The dream is the common thread that binds the family together.

3. They read the scriptures

Be it the Koran, the Torah, the Bible or any other spiritual guidance book; instill a habit of reading these books in children from a young age.

4. Display symbols of that in which the family believes

It’s always good to see physical objects as reminder of what the family’s values are.

5. Appreciate each other

Fathers may be pre-occupied with work, mothers short of patience, siblings at each other’s throats and the elderly stubborn, yet they remain family and each has his or her good and bad characteristics. Learn to live with the good and bad of each other and appreciate the bond of a family.

6. Celebrate special occasions

Be they birthdays, anniversaries, or spiritual days to celebrate. Enjoy and create a festive atmosphere if possible. These are memories in the making, the pictures and stories that will be passed on to future generations.

7. Make time for each other

In today’s world, everybody has hectic schedules. Even if it is just once in a while, spend quality time with those nearest to you. It may involve different versions for every family, but make sure there is time scheduled to do things together, to listen to each other and to allow time for just being together.

8. Lastly, help those in need

There are always those who have less than us. Whether your family gives a blanket to a homeless person, a donation to a charity organization or in whichever way you’re able to assist in a small way,  just give a little bit of time, money or effort to those who are in need.

These are simple guidelines, but in a world so focused on success and wealth, it’s worth focusing a bit on the spiritual side of our being as well.
