Former President Banda has described as a huge honour his appointment as leader of the 18-member Election Observation Mission to the Kingdom of Lesotho for next week's National Assembly elections, scheduled for 26th May.

Mr Banda who is currently based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, where he is the current 'President-in-residence' at the Boston University African Presidential Center, says he does not take lightly his appointment.

The former president says democracy is a precious commodity in Africa and must be protected.

He says he looks forward to meeting all the parties involved in the forthcoming elections.

This is the second time Mr Banda has been honoured with the privilege of heading an election observer mission in Africa.

Last year, he acted as co-leader for the United States-based Carter Center during the November polls in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Banda left office after losing in the 2011elections to President Michael Sata.
