President Michael Sata has appointed Justice Lombe Chibesakunda as acting Chief Justice, sidelining Chief justice Earnest Sakala, whose contract is to expire in July.

President Sata has also appointed Justice Florence Mumba as acting deputy Chief Justice. The appointments are with immediate effect.

Justice Ernest Sakala, and his deputy, Dennis Chirwa have been sent on forced leave.

Lately, there have been calls for the resignation of the Chief Justice and other judiciary rank and file, who have been accused of corruption.

However, the judges have labeled the judiciary “reforms” as a selective witch-hunt.

Recently, three suspended judges challenged President Sata’s decision to suspend them and subsequently appointing a tribunal to investigate them. The matter is before the court.
