Councils urged to be transparent
Local government and housing minister Professor Nkandu Luo says the government will only come up with policies that will enable the councils in the country generate wealth once the local authorities begin to be more transparent in financial management.
Professor Luo says that currently the councils in the country are not doing fine when it comes to financial accountability for the resources that they generate from the various activities such as issuance of trading licences.
Professor Luo notes that the ministry wants to ensure that financial systems in the councils become more effective to allow for prudent utilizations of the resources that are generated from the already existing income generating activities.
The minister was responding to calls from opposition parliamentarians who have been calling on the government to ensure that it ensure that local authorities in the country have more income generating activities to enable them sustain themselves financially.
